A goldfish. An HR manager. And a staffing sales rep.

Staffing sales attention spans

No this is not the setup for a lame joke (although feel free to send me your punchline!). It’s actually about attention span statistics…and their implications for people who sell staffing.

Consider this:

  • Average attention span of a human: 8 seconds
  • Average attention of a goldfish: 9 seconds

What does this mean for you?

It’s easier to get the attention of a goldfish than an HR manager!

So if you want to sell to an HR manager, or any other human, you need to:

  • Get to the point.
    – focus your message on one key point.
  • Say something interesting.
    – your message has to blow people away.
  • Use visuals.
    – people process visual content 60,000 times faster).
  • Be repetitive.
    – for your message to be heard, you have to repeat…and repeat…and repeat.
  • Use more channels of communication.
    – some people love email, others prefer social media, and some like the phone best.

Selling staffing is not easy. Your first sale is to win the battle for attention. Then you have to generate interest. And lastly, you sell your organization. If you lose either of the first two battles, you’ll get no chance to make the sale.

More interesting data (and implications)

Average number of times per hours an office worker checks email: 30
– email marketing MUST be part of your sales strategy!

Percent of website page views that last less than 4 seconds: 17
– your website has even less time to catch someone’s attention!

Percent of words read on an average web page: 28%
Percent of words read on web pages 111 words or less: 49%
– Shorter web copy is better!

Average length watched of an internet video: 2.7 minutes
– video holds people’s attention longer and should be part of your marketing mix.
