Is your brand holding you back?


Last week, I was chatting with our Creative Director about her presentation for this year’s SMART IDEAS Summit.


My request, "Our theme this year is Re-imagining your staffing business. Let’s do something on the future of staffing websites."


She raised an eyebrow. "We've done that before. This year, let's go bigger."


"Like what?" I asked.


"I see so many staffing companies with bad brands—ugly logos, bland messaging, websites that sound like carbon copies of each other. I want to focus on branding. Help our industry level up."


Boom. She nailed it (as always!).


Our discussion got me thinking...


Why do so many staffing companies have such weak brands?


It's not just an aesthetic problem. It's a growth problem.


A credibility problem.


And worst of all—a trust problem.


Let's talk about it.


BRAND BLINDSPOT:
Staffing companies don’t see the value


"Branding" sounds fluffy to a lot of staffing leaders.


They hear "brand" and think "that's just marketing nonsense...what we really need is to focus on making more calls." 


But here's the deal:

 

It's not just fluff. Your brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room. 


It's how clients perceive your value.

It's about the belief they have in your team.

And to a large extent, it determines whether your salespeople get ghosted or get callbacks.


When companies undervalue brand, here's what typically happens:


  • Marketing becomes reactive—chasing the latest "hot trend"
  • Messaging sounds identical to every competitor
  • Websites are cluttered with platitudes, not compelling stories and demonstrable value
  • Candidates don't feel a connection

 

According to LinkedIn, brands that are presented consistently across platforms see a 23% average increase in revenue. Yet most staffing firms have no defined voice, no cohesive identity, and no clear point of view.


TACTICAL TIP: Start with a brand audit.


Ask yourself (or your leadership team):


  • What do clients/candidates really think of us?
  • Do we sound/look the same as our top 5 competitors?
  • Can every team member explain what makes us different?


If the answers are fuzzy, your brand is costing you business.


KNOWLEDGE GAP:
Staffing leaders don’t know how to create a strong brand


Even well-meaning staffing executives get stuck here.


They want a stronger brand...but don’t know where to start.


Here’s a cheat sheet:


BRAND ARCHITECTURE 101


  1. Mission, Vision, Values
    • Why do you exist? Where are you going? What do you believe?
  2. Corporate Identity
    • Logo, colors, typography, design system
    • Must be consistent everywhere (this is a big fail point for many staffing brands!).
  3. Messaging
    • Positioning: Where do you sit in the market?
    • Value Proposition: Why should people choose you?
    • Core Story: What’s the narrative behind your brand?
  4. Brand Experience
    • What's it like to work with your company? Does your team deliver the brand promise at every touchpoint?
    • Policies, procedures, onboarding, service. It all counts


Want a shortcut?


Run a 2-week internal "Brand Sprint":


  • Pick a team of 3-5 people
  • Map out your mission, values, identity, messaging
  • Get feedback from clients and candidates
  • Tighten and test what you find


COST MYTH:
Staffing companies think branding is too expensive


Here’s the truth:

You don’t need a $100K agency engagement to build a better brand.


Great branding isn’t about budget. It’s about clarity and consistency.


And here are a few low-cost, high-impact upgrades:


  • Revisit your mission, vision, and values. Are they clear? Compelling? Do you live them daily?
  • Look at your logo and sales collateral. Do they match the image you want to convey?
  • How about your website? Time to freshen it up?
  • What about your messaging? Could you tweak it to more strongly focus on who you help and how you’re different?
  • Create a tone-of-voice guide so your whole team sounds like...well, you. (AI can be a GREAT helper in defining your brand voice!)


Let’s do the math:

If a lackluster brand costs you just 3 clients a year...that could be $100K+ in lost revenue.
