SMART IDEAS #94:

How AI can supercharge staffing sales (without making you sound like a bot)

David Searns | Co-CEO

What if you never had to do cold prospecting again?

No more guessing who to call. No more generic emails.

And no more “just checking in” follow-ups.

Sound too good to be true?

Welcome to the AI-powered future of staffing sales.

This is part two in our four-part series on how to use AI in staffing. In our last issue, we laid out best practices for working with AI. Today, we’re diving into the front lines—sales.

Because while AI won’t close deals for you, it can do everything else leading up to the close…better, faster, and smarter.

Here’s how...

Lead generation & prospecting

Let’s start with the part (almost) everyone hates: prospecting.

AI is turning cold outreach from a needle-in-a-haystack hunt into a precision-targeted operation.

  • Predictive lead scoring: Many CRMs now include engagement tracking to score which prospects are most likely to convert. Knowing who to call? More closed deals!
  • ICP generation: Feed the LinkedIn profiles of your best clients into an AI and then use that data to build a profile of your ideal customer, so you can target your prospecting with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Prospect list building: There are more tools than ever to help you build hyper-specific prospect lists, including Zoominfo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Apollo, Hunter.io, Clearbit, Lusha, Seamless.ai, and more.

You can also use tools like these to enrich data you already have—find missing names, email addresses, job titles, etc. The more data you collect…the more targeted your outreach can be. And then you can use AI to personalize your cold emails, calls, and LinkedIn messages.

Personally, I am a fan of Builtwith, a tool that allows you to find companies based on the technology they use on their websites.
  • Website visitor intel: Platforms like LeadForensics, Visual Visitor, and Clearbit can identify 30% to 40% of anonymous visitors and qualify them instantly based on firmographics and behavior. Some even include AI agents to automate follow up!

📍 Pro tip: Pair a lead tracking solution with ChatGPT to generate custom outreach emails and scripts based on real-time visitor behavior. Just don’t say “hey, I saw you were on our website!”

Personalization & outreach

Let’s be honest. Most AI personalized cold emails are pure garbage.

But they don’t have to be.

Rather than trying to personalize based on some fact in a person’s LinkedIn profile (no, I don’t want a Wharton hoodie!), personalize based on the prospect’s business challenges.

AI can give you a very accurate prediction of likely challenges based on a person’s industry and job title.

Here are a few ways you can use AI for better outreach:

  • Hyper-personalized cold emails: AI can scan a prospect’s LinkedIn, blog posts, or company news to write intros that feel like you did your homework—and you understand the buyer’s views, opinions, and challenges.
  • Persona-driven scripts: Selling to a skeptical CFO vs. a stressed-out HR manager? AI can generate different scripts based on persona archetypes.
  • LinkedIn DMs & Comments: AI can draft personalized InMails and comment strategies for visibility—without sounding like a robot or a bro marketer.

👉 Example: “Write a LinkedIn DM to a VP of Operations at a food manufacturing company who just posted about hiring challenges. Keep it informal and offer a resource.” (Of course, make sure you already prompted with the right context like we discussed in last week’s SMART IDEA!)

Sales enablement

Ugh, I hate this term (sorry, personal pet peeve!).

But now more than ever, your sales team needs help. Something…anything to break through the clutter, demonstrate the value you can offer, and break open the door for a call.

Here are a few ways to use AI to differentiate your selling:

  • Personalized sales collateral: Want your prospecting emails (or follow-up) to stand out from the competition? Create a custom sell sheet or even a pitch deck based on the research you’ve done or the conversation you just had with a prospect.

Use AI to do the research, craft the story, pitch your services, and personalize based on everything you know (and it knows) about your prospect.
  • Presentation generators: Try tools like Gamma.ai where you can provide a plain English outline for your “killer pitch deck” and get a gorgeous finished presentation in minutes.
  • Battlecards: AI can track competitor websites, reviews, and pricing updates to generate up-to-date battlecards—automatically.

🎯 Pro Tip: Do Deep Research on your prospect and their industry to feed your chat, project, or content generation tool of choice. Better data in. More compelling data out!

Sales coaching & training

Hiring new reps? Training veterans? AI has a role to play.

  • Create your own role-play GPT: Take your buyer personas and objection handling transcripts and ask ChatGPT to build you a custom GPT your reps can use to practice cold calls, meeting openings, handling objections, or any other aspect of your sales process.

You can even ask the GPT to prompt you with “how tough do you want me to be,” so your team can build their skills practicing on the most difficult “synthetic staffing buyers.”
  • Call analysis: Tools like Gong or Read.ai can now analyze tone, empathy, talk ratio, and deal-risk signals. Have your team review their call recordings (and self-critique their performance)—it’s an incredible skill builder!
  • Email feedback: Are you a compelling writer? How about your team? Before hitting send, ask your AI to critique your email. Or better yet, ask it how the prospect is likely to respond…and what you can do to make the copy more compelling.

🧠 Coaching tip: Use ChatGPT to summarize long calls into bullet points and highlight key action items. Then use the summary to create your follow up correspondence, which of course, AI can write for you!

Pipeline & forecasting

AI isn’t just a content machine—it’s a crystal ball for your pipeline.

  • Deal-risk prediction: Based on email engagement, call sentiment, and CRM activity, AI can flag deals that are going sideways before they ghost you.
  • Pipeline dashboards: Tools like Clari or HubSpot AI can visualize pipeline health and recommend next-best actions. Think: “Follow up with Acme Inc—they opened your email 4 times but didn’t respond.”
  • Task automation: Follow-ups, meeting scheduling, CRM updates—AI can handle it all. That means more time selling, less time typing.

🔁 And yes, a lot of this can integrate with your ATS too (if it plays nice).

Account-based selling

When you're targeting high-value clients, you need more than contact info. You need strategy.

  • Account plans: AI can build org charts, map key contacts, and even suggest personalized messaging sequences for each stakeholder.
  • Intent signals: Spot when a company posts new job openings, raises funding, or changes tech providers. AI can surface these signals daily.
  • Smart alerts: “Your prospect’s VP of HR just got promoted.” That’s a cue to reach out—with context.

TL;DR — Sell smarter, not harder

AI won’t replace great salespeople. But it will replace salespeople who don’t adapt.

To recap, here’s how to start using AI in your sales process:

  1. Find better leads: Use AI to score, enrich, and qualify prospects.
  2. Craft better outreach: Personalize emails, DMs, and scripts at scale.
  3. Close faster: Automate proposals, objections, and enablement tools.
  4. Train smarter: Use AI for role-play, analysis, and coaching.
  5. Forecast better: Let AI flag risky deals and pipeline gaps.
  6. Go deeper with accounts: Use intent data and smart alerts to drive ABM.

Next week, we’re shifting gears to AI for marketing. Think: smarter campaigns, better content, faster execution.
